Our motivation
“everyone can travel” is a&o’s guiding principle, and sustainability is a personal concern for founder and CEO Oliver Winter! Not because it is fashionable, but because it is equally important for economic success and for preserving the foundations of life for future generations.
After all, a&o firmly believes that responsible travel brings great benefits. Travel educates, creates intercultural understanding, helps people understand global connections and much more.
By accommodating many school groups and young travellers, a&o reaches young people in particular – the next generation, in other words those for whom we all want to preserve a socially and ecologically intact planet.
The 2nd Sustainability Report, published in July 2024, impressively documents a&o’s commitment as part of its ESG strategy (Environmental, Social and Governance). With its “Net Zero” target, for example, a&o will become Europe’s first CO2-neutral hostel chain as early as 2025.
With the charitable organisation a&o educare e. V., a&o creates the structures to implement charitable projects – in particular ESD, Education for Sustainable Development – based on the “17 SDGs”, the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, for guests and staff alike.
SDGs 6, 7, 8, 11, 12 and 13 are particularly relevant for a&o – they were given special consideration in the materiality analysis and in the sustainable business strategy derived from it.
